What is a Battery Energy Storage System and Can it Save You Money?

Learn more about how battery energy storage can be used in the home.

The energy industry is currently facing some of its biggest challenges yet and some energy companies have gone into administration, leaving their customers uncertain about how this affects their energy supply and future bills.

This is a pivotal moment which is forcing us to evaluate our energy sources and the way in which we use energy. Interest is growing in creating properties which are more self-reliant and can operate independent of the grid - whether this is just for a few hours of the day, longer periods or complete independence.

Homeowners and property developers are using technologies such as solar thermal, solar pv, batteries and heat pumps along with design features like passivhaus, to become highly energy efficient, reducing their energy usage, carbon footprint and energy costs.

How can these systems work together?

  • At Thermal Earth we specialise in complete energy system design and often provide systems which feature solar pv, a battery and a heat pump. Our systems feature MasterTherm heat pumps which are equipped with the ability to integrate with smart electricity tariffs such as Agile Octopus or Octopus Go. Agile Octopus will change price every half hour in line with the wholesale cost of electricity, this means the cost often falls during off-peak hours. MasterTherm heat pumps can self-optimise to heat your home to your preferred temperature but at the lowest possible cost. This is most efficient when a thermal battery such as the Sunamp is installed, as the battery can be charged when energy costs more and deployed when the cost rises - avoiding price spikes.
  • Solar thermal systems can use free energy from the sun to generate hot water, reducing demand on the heat pump which is powered by electricity. If you have a ground source heat pump, you can store excess energy from solar thermal in the ground loops (this typically occurs during summer months), which effectively ‘charges’ the ground with heat energy, making your heat pump more efficient during the winter season.
  • Solar pv can be used to contribute as much as 50% of a home's electricity needs, by also implementing battery storage, you can increase this percentage to maximise your savings. Unused electricity generated by the solar pv system will be stored in the battery and deployed when next needed. You could also install a power diverter such as the eddi from My Energi. The eddi can divert unused solar power to instead be used to provide energy for your heating system, maximising your use of renewable energy.

What are the benefits of an energy battery?

  • Become more energy efficient
  • Reduce your carbon footprint
  • Save money on your energy bills
  • Modernise and add value to your home
  • Long-lasting technology - Sunamp batteries are capable of 40,000 charge cycles - the equivalent to 50 years of use.
