Carmarthenshire - Retrofit
Ffos y Broga retrofit
Oil heating was replaced by an 18kW air source heat pump paired with solar PV at this pre-1850 home, retaining its radiator system.
Read their storyA carefully designed heat pump can keep your home comfortable and may lower heating bills. The result depends on your home, the fuel you replace, your electricity tariff and how the system is used. Our family-run team, based at Capel Hendre near Ammanford, can guide you through design, installation and available grants.

A heat pump doesn't blast and stop like a boiler. It keeps your whole home at a steady, gentle warmth — the kind you stop noticing, in the best way.
No more cold corners or chasing the thermostat. Just steady comfort, all day.
Air source heat pumps have a fan and are not silent. We assess the equipment and its position to manage sound.
Grant values and eligibility depend on your property and system. We can check the current Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules and guide the application for eligible homes.
Eligible residential heat-pump installations are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. Welsh homeowners can also explore Green Homes Wales advice and interest-free finance, subject to its eligibility and application process.
£7,500 for eligible air-to-water or ground-source installations. £9,000 when replacing oil or LPG at a property with no mains gas connection, for applications properly made from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. We check eligibility and handle the paperwork.

| System | Before the grant | After a £7,500 BUS grant, if eligible |
|---|---|---|
| Air source (air-to-water) | £8,000–£16,500 | £500–£9,000 |
| Ground source (collector types combined) | About £19,000–£38,000 | About £11,500–£30,500 |
Sources: Nesta's published air source range and Which?'s 2026 ground source guide, reporting BUS installations from October 2022 to December 2025, rounded here. They do not cover every installation or provide separate ranges for each ground collector.
Horizontal collector or borehole? The Energy Saving Trust gives around £15,000 as a typical trench-based installation cost. Boreholes generally cost more; its heat-pump guide says the cost can reach around £57,000 where drilling is needed. A ground source project can therefore sit outside the combined range above.
Replacing oil or LPG? Eligible homes with no mains gas connection can receive £9,000 rather than £7,500 for applications properly made by 31 March 2027. For example, a £12,000 installation would leave £4,500 after the standard grant or £3,000 after the uplifted grant. We confirm the applicable grant and show it on your quote. Check the grant rules.
Use the estimator for a figure based on your home; a survey and agreed specification are needed for a firm quote. No EPC? Send an enquiry or call 01269 833100.
Start with a conversation, then a survey and a written design. We agree the programme for your home before work starts.
Tell us about your home. We'll talk through options and rough costs — no pressure, no jargon.
Allow 1–2 hours; there's no charge. We assess insulation, radiator sizes, hot-water demand, space for equipment, garden access and ground conditions where relevant. Bring your questions and recent energy bills so we can discuss how you use your heating.
Allow 1–2 weeks for the design stage. We calculate heat loss, size the system and set out the proposed equipment, work and estimated running costs. We also check grant eligibility.
Allow 3–7 days for the internal installation. We connect the equipment and pipework, test and commission the system, then explain the controls and leave the handover documents.
For ground source, allow a separate 1–5 days for drilling or laying horizontal collectors. These are planning indications, not a fixed completion promise: ground conditions, access, permissions and the agreed scope can change the programme.
Thermal Earth coordinates design, drilling and installation so one accountable team guides the project from survey to aftercare.
