System: MasterTherm AQ17i heat pumps
Sector: Residential
Location: Carmarthenshire
Key Features: Lake Collector Heat Pump Installation
Date: 2020

Overview:
A lake collector heat pump system provides an ideal solution for properties located near large bodies of water, where the bottom water remains unfrozen. The system extracts heat from the lake and transfers it to a heat pump to supply both heating and hot water.
Challenge:
Two residential properties near a Carmarthenshire lake required a renewable heating solution. The challenge was to design a system that could efficiently extract energy from the lake while integrating with new radiator systems inside the homes.
Solution:
In August 2020, we completed a two-week installation of a ground source heat pump using a lake collector system.
System features:
- MasterTherm AQ17i heat pumps installed in each property (4 kW output)
- Compact design fits in airing cupboards, under stairs, or kitchen cupboards
- Lake collector closed-loop system weighted and floated to the lake bottom, filled with non-freezing solution
- Piping connecting the loop to the houses buried in 1-metre trenches
- New radiator systems installed in each property to optimize heat distribution
Key Benefits:
- Efficient, low-carbon heating and hot water sourced from the lake
- Minimal footprint inside the home with compact heat pump units
- Closed-loop system prevents freezing and ensures reliable operation
- Environmentally friendly solution using renewable heat from a natural resource
- Rapid installation completed within two weeks
Results:
- Both properties now enjoy reliable heating and hot water from a sustainable source
- Homeowners benefit from reduced energy costs and a low-carbon system
- System seamlessly integrates with new radiator layouts and property interiors
