Overview:
Originally founded as a boarding school in 1902 by Miss Bessie Jago, St Margaret’s School in Exeter flourished for over a century before closing its doors in the 21st century. Over 100 years later, Grenadier — a developer renowned for its sustainable approach — has transformed the site into St Margaret’s Residences, a collection of luxury, energy-efficient homes that prove period properties can rival new builds for performance.
Challenge:
Redeveloping historic buildings into modern, energy-efficient homes posed a unique challenge: preserving the period architecture and character while achieving contemporary standards of comfort, sustainability, and efficiency. The solution needed to integrate discreetly with the existing structures without compromising aesthetics or heritage features.
Solution:
To provide efficient, sustainable heating across the residences, a hybrid heating system was designed and installed, combining the reliability of gas with the low-carbon efficiency of heat pumps.
System features:
- Cascade of four custom-optimised MasterTherm AquaMaster Inverters (AQ90i)
- Hybrid configuration to complement existing gas systems
- Supplies heating to multiple residences across the development
- Seamless integration into the building design to preserve historic aesthetics
- Works alongside other renewable technologies including solar thermal systems
Key Benefits:
