The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive has been confirmed for renewable systems completed by March 31st 2022

The chancellor of the exchequer Rishi Sunak has recently announced an extension to the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive until 31st March 2022. Originally the Renewable Heat Incentive was ending on the 31st March 2021 leaving many is disarray and wondering what is the next incentive or will there even be a next incentive for renewable heating systems? The announcement was made on the 11th March 2020 that the Domestic RHI will be extended an extra year and will now end on the 31st March 2022.

What is Domestic RHI?

The Domestic RHI Government Scheme intended for use by domestic customers like homeowners. Homeowners who have the eligible heating systems installed will fall under the Domestic RHI Scheme.

Eligible Systems for Domestic RHI :

• Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
• Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
• Biomass 
• Solar Thermal 

It is important to note to qualify for the RHI scheme your renewable heating system must be installed by an MCS Accredited Installer. You can search the MCS Installer database here.

What is after the Domestic RHI?

Life after Domestic RHI is unsure, we do know however, the government have set a net zero 2050 target to tackle climate change and are continuously enforcing laws like the gas heating ban for new homes from 2025 and setting new goals that they must stick to and ensure the future is green energy. One thing is for sure there must be more incentives and reasons to increase the use of renewable heating technologies in homes and businesses.

Is now the best time to invest in Renewable Heating Systems? 

The short answer is yes, as it stands for the next 2 years, if you have one of the above renewable heating systems installed before the 1st of April 2022 then you will receive payment from the government every quarter for the next 7 years (Domestic RHI), As the future is uncertain to what comes after the Domestic RHI. It is the best to consider having a renewable heating system installed as soon as possible like heat pumps to ensure your investment into renewable heating is rewarded for the full 7 years.
