The Growing Demand for Heat Pump Installers

Heating Engineer Tools

New research from consulting giant EY has found that there are only around 1,200 qualified heat pump installers in the UK, while almost 10,000 will be required by 2025. This increase in demand is being driven by the implementation of the Future Homes Standard which comes into effect the same year, placing a ban on the installation of gas boilers in new builds.

Whilst a large majority of installers required will come from gas boiler installation backgrounds, a career pathway needs to be developed and promoted by educational facilities to provide young adults with information on how to become fully qualified in this growing industry. The average UK salary for a HVAC engineer is over £35,000, a salary which is able to offer great stability, particularly during these uncertain times as the UK economy restructures from the impacts of COVID-19 and Brexit.

Without the recruitment of new heat pump installers, the government plan to tackle climate change could fall short of targets which currently represent a 20-fold increase from today's installation figures - reaching as many as 300,000 heat pumps a year within four years and 600,000 a year by 2028.

Heating and powering homes currently accounts for 22% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions, a figure which needs to be significantly reduced in order to reach carbon net zero targets by 2050.

Here at Thermal Earth we're actively working to support new and existing heat pump installers by offering a variety of specialised services and resources.
